What these figures mean for joinery: The radial shrinkage of 0.7% and tangential shrinkage of 1.5% are the lowest in our entire range. Accoya is 4-5 times more dimensionally stable than spruce. In practice, an Accoya profile does not warp or jam during humidity changes. λ 0.12 W/m·K (EN 12667) – a very good thermal coefficient. MOE 5.29 GPa is the lowest in the range; on IV92 the massive profile compensates perfectly. Janka Hardness 4,100 N – higher than spruce (1,680 N), Nordic pine (2,420 N), meranti (2,460 N), and larch (3,290 N), though oak remains the choice for heavy-traffic thresholds.

Accoya delivers Class 1 durability with the thermal performance of a softwood, making it unique for demanding exposures.

λ 0.12 W/m·K (EN 12667). The Uf-value of the Accoya frame on IV92 is similar to IV92 spruce. Uw at standard configuration: calculated on request for PHPP.

0.7% radial and 1.5% tangential shrinkage – 4-5x better than spruce. (ISO 4469, wet→oven dry) For a 1230×1480 mm sash, variation is under 1 mm compared to 3-4 mm for spruce.

Class 1. In difficult exposures – south-facing without roof, marine climate, mountain freeze-thaw – Accoya functions predictably long-term without frequent maintenance.

Accoya's acetylation ensures long-term performance even in the most demanding environments.

Acetylation chemically transforms the wood cells – fungi and rot cannot settle without access to hydroxyl groups. Maximum biological resistance without post-manufacturing treatment.

The uncoated surface becomes silvery-grey upon UV exposure – not structural degradation. With a factory-applied Remmers finish, colour remains controlled and stable.

Dimensional stability (0.7% radial) means sashes do not warp, jam, or leave gaps during seasonal humidity changes – especially important in periodically unheated homes.

Advantages

  • Class 1 natural durability – the only one in the range with λ 0.12 W/m·K
  • Dimensional stability 4-5x compared to spruce – 0.7% radial shrinkage
  • λ 0.12 W/m·K (EN 12667) – very good thermal performance, no compromise on Uw
  • SM WOOD Warranty: 10 years
  • Maintenance frequency depends on the finish and exposure
  • Predictable behavior in extreme exposures (south-facing, marine, mountain)

Disadvantages

  • Exclusive to IV92 and D92 – not available on IV68 or IV78
  • MOE 5.29 GPa – lowest in the range; not a problem on IV92, but limits applicability
  • Higher cost compared to spruce or Nordic pine
  • Made to order with longer lead time compared to standard species
  • Neutral visual appearance under stains – lacks the expressiveness of hardwoods or meranti

Key Details

  • Accoya exclusively on IV92 and D92 profiles – not available on IV68, IV78, D68, D78.
  • Made to order – extended lead time due to supply chain from New Zealand/Chile and acetylation in the Netherlands.
  • FSC available on request – discussed at quoting.
  • 10-year SM WOOD warranty on all Accoya joinery.
  • Lead time discussed at the time of quoting.

The price varies depending on profile (IV92/D92), opening size and configuration – request a free quotation. For B2B projects: we provide Ud, Uf, Ug and PHPP data on request.

  • The project has difficult exposure: south-facing without a roof, marine climate, mountain altitude with intense freeze-thaw cycles
  • The house is periodically unheated (holiday home) - extreme variable humidity, Accoya's stability maintains airtightness
  • The client wants Class 1 durability without sacrificing thermal performance (λ 0.12 vs 0.19 for Class 1 tropical species)
  • The project uses IV92 or D92 - the profiles on which Accoya is available
  • Rare maintenance is a documented requirement (difficult exposure, owner periodically absent)
  • The project is on IV68 or IV78 – Accoya is not supplied for these profiles.
  • Budget is the main factor – spruce or Nordic pine covers nZEB at a much lower cost.
  • The finish requires a transparent, expressive grain – Accoya is visually neutral.
  • Exposure is standard (north/east with roof protection) – spruce holds up correctly with regular maintenance.

A product. The base is Pinus radiata, a pine from New Zealand or Chile. Accsys Technologies (Netherlands) applies the acetylation process – a chemical treatment that transforms the cellular structure of the wood without adding preservatives. The result has Class 1 natural durability.

Accoya's modulus of elasticity (5.29 GPa) is lower compared to traditional species. On profiles with smaller depth (68 mm, 78 mm), the moment of inertia / stiffness ratio is more critical. On IV92, the more massive geometry compensates – Accoya laminated profiles function structurally without issues at standard sizes.

Yes, the uncoated surface becomes silvery-grey upon UV exposure. It is not structural degradation – it is a surface reaction of the cellulose. With a Remmers finish applied in the factory, the colour remains controlled and stable. Grey Accoya is not degraded Accoya.

λ 0.12 W/m·K (EN 12667). The Uf-value of the Accoya frame on IV92 is similar to IV92 spruce. Uw at standard size 1230x1480 mm with Ug 0.5 W/m²K: calculated on request with exact values for PHPP (Uf, Uw, Ug, g-value, psi-spacer, dB).

SM WOOD applies a 10-year warranty on Accoya joinery – compared to the standard 5-year warranty on other species.

More – the raw material, the acetylation process, and transport from the Netherlands are reflected in the price. The correct comparison is not the initial cost, but the total cost over the lifespan: rarer maintenance, better stability, higher durability.
